Installation cost is a deciding factor for preference over one form of renewable energy over the other. However studies are being conducted that make less use of land and are able to produce the same or more amount of energy as compared to the conventional methods. This could prove to be another deciding factor while harnessing renewable energy.
Researcher John Dabiri of Caltech, professor of aeronautics and bioengineering, has some interesting results to show from a test he conducted on vertical axis wind turbines. The results stated, the energy generated from vertical axis wind turbines per square metre is more than the energy generated from traditional wind turbines. A main advantage of these turbines is that they can be placed close together which is not possible with the conventional propeller like turbines.
The test conducted by Dabiri comprised of 24 vertical axis turbines provided by Windspire energy. These turbines resemble a 10 meter tall column and were spaced at 75 metre per square. During the test he calculated how much energy is generated per square metre to gauge the amount of aerodynamic disturbance created by the other turbines.
It was found that the power density of the vertical axis turbines exceeded the power density of the horizontal axis turbines by six to nine times. The conclusion of the test was that the wind farm design and technology plays an important role calculating the power performance of single turbines.
Dabiri stated that conventional horizontal turbines generate two to three power watts for per square metre of land, while much more power can be generated through vertical axis turbines by strategic positioning that allows them to pull in energy from above the wind farm and the neighbouring turbines.
Land used for power generation is often an issue for renewable energy projects. These projects typically require more land than nuclear or fossil fuel plants. If the findings of the above tests are successfully applied for commercial, industrial and residential purposes, wind energy from vertical axis turbines could take off in a big way.
